Akureyri is often referred to as the 'capital of the north'. But, with a population of around 16,000 this is a city break on a small scale! Akureyri has a superb holiday location, almost at the head of the stunning Eyjafjordur, on the northern coast of Iceland, about an hours drive from Lake Myvatn. It has a higher than average sunshine record, one of the country’s best Botanical Gardens, the most northerly golf course in Europe, a fantastic outdoor geothermal pool, hot tub and steam bath complex and, unusually for Iceland, a profusion of trees! Not exactly mighty oaks but trees none the less!
Set along one side of the beautiful fjord, with a stunning mountainous backdrop, Akureyri is a place to fall in love with.
Its botanical gardens include examples of the entire Icelandic flora along with other subarctic species, and the Kjarnask6gur leisure area contains some of the finest woodlands in north Iceland.
A wide variety of day trips are available from Akureyri to spectacular sights in North Iceland. These include the magnificent Goöafoss ("Waterfall of the Gods"); the bird watchers' paradise of Lake MSwatn in its lava setting, on the edge of a still active volcanic field; Eyjafjöröur panorama by road and sea including Hrisey island; and air trip to Grfmsey (pop. 100) bordering on the Arctic Circle. Whale watching is a recent attraction in Eyjafjöröur, with very good sighting rates. |
